HOW IT ALL STARTED... The idea of the blood bank was born when Dr Nagnath Mahendrakar, Past President of Rotary Club of Bolton (UK), a close friend of PDG N.K.Kulkarni, visited Dharwad. He visited Rotary Club of Dharwad Midtown and discussed about any health needs of the town. The then president of the Club, Rtn.F.C.Patil and members proposed the establishment of Blood Bank, which is a long felt need of Dharwad.

Later on Rtn.Raju Lingareddy agreed to become a settler by paying Rs.25,000.00 and Rtn Uday Chipre's donation of Rs.25,000.00 was instrumental for the formation of a Trust. Hence ROTARY CLUB DHARWAD MIDTOWN CHARITABLE TRUST was registered under the chairmanship of Rtn Mahesh Mamledesai and other members and started acting vigorously.

The Club, Rotary Club Dharwad Midtown, was chartered in 19992 and has about 30 members. The average age of the members is 36 years. It is an active club which has undertaken many successful community projects, ex. Establishing drinking water supply to villages, holding regular medical clinics at remote villages, animal welfare schemes and other such activities. And to top it all, the active participation in Polio Plus Project.

Dharwad provides health care to many surrounding villages. there are mainly 2-3 hospitals that provide health care. Civil Hospital and another Lourdes Hospital run by Italian Nuns. The later one is a charitable hospital that charges only those who can afford to pay. There are also several private hospitals for the people who can afford to pay.

Dharwad does not have a blood bank nor is there a national blood transfusion service! The nearest blood bank is 25 Kms away. It is a private commercial bank. Some hospitals do have blood banks but they cater to only their requirements. And many times the donors are poor people donating blood for money. Frequently the blood is low in hemoglobin as the donors themselves are aneamic. Some places the service is also very unreliable, roads are poor, traffic is heavy and blood can take atleast an hour to reach Dharwad. If a patient needs a transfusion in a hospital in Dharwad his relatives are approached to donate blood and this can be a complicated and time-consuming process.

Vital time is lost in saving lives. Hence the need for a Blood Bank.

A building is earmarked in Dharwad for the Blood Bank comprising of 4 rooms; one for reception, one for collection of blood from donors, one for testing of the blood and one for storage. The project will require the following staff; Dr.Shambhulingayya,a pathologist (a member of Dharwad Club) , a technician, a nurse and an administrator.

The members of the club have been visiting other blood banks around the coutry to study how they run. They have also met with voluntary blood donors from local population of Dharwad.

The basic, approximate cost of equipment for the project consists of the following:

1. Microscope $3,000.00

2. Centrifuge machine $3,000.00

3. Air Conditioner $6,000.00

4. Blood Analyser $6,000.00

5. Large special Refrigerator $6,000.00

6. Steriliser $2,000.00

7. Furniture and fittings $5,000.00

8. Equipment and Chemicals for $5,000.00

blood testing

If more funds are raised more equipment will be bought to split the Blood in to different components for example Plasma, platelets etc to provide for needs of individual patients.

The cost of the building is borne by Lourdes Hospital (known as German Hospital) Dharwad and the area for the purpose is around 1800 sq. ft which is ready. The day-to-day running cost will be borne by the Rotary club Dharwad midtown Charitable Trust.

The Project has been discussed at the district level in India and has the approval of the council. The project has been adopted by the Rotary Club of Bolton as well as the District 1280 R.I.B.I.

The money has already been approved by Rotary Foundation and is to be received any day. Additional equipment are also proposed for fractionation and funds for the same have been raised by Dr.Nath Mahindrakar to the tune of 13,000.00 Pound Sterling, which has been already received.

The running cost would be around Rs.3,00,000.00 per year hence we intend to raise about 15 to 20 Lacs and use the interest component of the same to run the blood bank. To avail the tax benefit, 80G facility is also available.
