THE NEED:
Dharwad does not have a blood bank nor is there a national blood transfusion service! The nearest blood bank is 25 Kms away. It is a private commercial bank. Some hospitals do have blood banks but they cater to only their requirements. And many a times the donors are poor people donating blood for money. Frequently the blood is low in haemaglobin as the donors themselves are aneamic. Some places the service is also very unreliable, roads are poor, traffic is heavy and blood can take atleast an hour to reach Dharwad. If a patient needs a transfusion in a hospital in Dharwad his relatives are approached to donate Blood and this can be a complicated and time consuming process. Vital time is lost in saving lives. Hence the need for a Blood Bank. THE LOCATION:The Lourdes Hospital (German Hospital) run by Italian Nurses where the Medical facilities available at a very nominal fees (free for the poor) and also it has been taken care that they render a quality treatment also. Once we offered for the Blood Bank, they agreed to construct the building free of Cost. The Building has already come up. For More Info about the location, click here. THE DONORS:Dr. Nagnath Mahindrakar, born in Dharwad, had left for Bolton,UK 50 years back, had come down to Dharwad during 1995, visited our Club. When asked about what he can do for Dharwad, Club members presented him an idea of a Blood bank at Dharwad. Rotary Club of Bolton, with their President for the year 1997-98, Dr.Nath Mahindrakar(of Rotary District 1280) came up with a Matching grant proposal and could raise almost Rs.25,00,000/-. WE NEED MORE FUNDS FOR RUNNING THE BLOOD BANK. We need almost 20 lakh rupees for running the blood bank without any problems. If that amount is collected, we can charge the blood as less as possible. We even plan to give the blood FREE to the poor people. We have formed a Charitable Trust for running the Blood Bank. For details Click here |
