Part IX The struggle for liberation of Hyderabad in north karnataka region, has a very important and invaluable contribution from the late Jagadguru Dr.Channabasava Pattadadevaru of Bhalki's Hiremath Samsthan mutt. The swamiji, who is held in great reverence by thousands of people in the state of Karnataka, Andhra and Maharastra, even today, used the influence of mutt on common people to inspire them to participate in the struggle for liberation of Hyderabad. Bhalki is today a taluk place in Bidar district and close to Hyderabad. As in Kukunur or Koppal, the Razaakars considered the present Bidar district as a important location and as a hub of thier activities. The proximity to Hyderabad, Maharastra and north karnataka made Bhalki a active centre as well. Incidentally, when the Indian army marched towards Hyderabad, it was the district of Bidar and particularly Bhalki that was ravaged by the retreating Razaakars and Nizam police. Entire villages were torched and many innocents were killed in this period. The Hirmath Samsthan mutt of Bhalki became the shelter to the people who lost thier family, house or property due to the acts of the Razaakars and Nizam police. In these circumstances, the swamiji ignored the grave danger due to overwhelming presence of Razaakars and the Nizam police and supporters and started kannada residential school under the name Shantivardak school at Moragi near Bhalki and he had to run this school by displaying a board outside that said that it was a urdu school run here!! The mutt also started providing free boarding and food to the students of the school and later to the people who joined the struggle for liberation of Hyderabad. leading the youths of Bidar and Bhalki in the struggle for liberation of Hyderabad, was Shri Bheemanna Khandre. He was supported by Shri Bandappa Vakil, Shri Warad, Shri Nagappanna Kadadi, Shri Gopikishen Marwadi and many other leaders. Shri.Khandre who is a close friend of Shri.Annadanayya Puranik, began to emulate the mundargi camp example in Bidar. Shri.Khandre led many daring attacks on the Razaakar camps and the police stations in the region. He risked his life to protect the people who were victimized by Razaakars and due to his fight against the Nizam, his family was harassed by the Nizam police again and again. Like Shri.Khandre many people had to go through lot of hardships and suffering for participating in the struggle for liberation of Hyderabad. Bidar district and in particular Bhalki shows the unique combination of relgious heads and youths coming together and involving in the fight for liberation of Hyderabad. |
