Part IV While the youths from Mundargi camp were fighting against the Nizam rule, the situation in Hyderabad was becoming volatile day by day. Mr.Jinnah visited Hyderabad on August 8th 1947 and gave the call for " Direct Action" to liberate Hyderabad from evil designs of India. The Razaakars were overjoyed and the safety of Hindus and Muslims who disagreed with Nizam became a great concern. In those days, Osmania university was one of the good universities in the region and youth from North karnataka went there to continue thier higher studies. The combined efforts of stalwarts like Shri.Annapoornayya Swami, Shri.Shivamurthy Shastri and youth leaders like Shri.Annadanayya Puranik resulted in convincing Diwan Mirza Ismail to provide land for setting up hostel for the youths from North Karnataka in Hyderabad. Shri.Bhoomareddi Basappa provided the money for the construction of the Hostel and facilities. A press to publish kannada books was also setup near the present Kachiguda Railway station and this press became one of the first to publish books written by North Karnataka writers, poets and scholars. The House of Shri.Annapoornayya Swami is said to be always open to the students from North Karnataka and many of them remember that but for the hospitality, food and affection given by Smt.Annapoornayya Swami it would have been difficult for them to continue the studies in Hyderabad. After Shri.Jinnah's speech on August 8th 1947, Shri Ramanand Theertha was arrested and this added to the tensions in Hyderabad in particular. The students under leadership of Shri.Annadanayya Puranik boycotted the university in protest against Shri Ramanand Theertha's arrest. But it was the sympathisers of Nizam rule and Razaakars who continued to attend classes. Unfortunately Shri.Veerendra Patil was one of them, who continued to attend the classes. Fearing voilence, thousands of students and families were moved out of Hyderabad and Diwan Mirza Ismail provided total security and support for this. But for Diwan Mirza Ismail's support, there would have been loss of thousands of innocent lives in Hyderabad alone. It was not a surprise when some congress and Hindu leaders who stayed back in Hyderabad, openly welcomed the declaration of Independence by the Nizam on 15th August 1947!!! More about this later. |
