Karnataka University is the second oldest university in Karnataka.In a few months time it is poised to celebrate its Golden Jubilee year (1998-99) It has jurisdiction over seven North Karnataka Districts namely , Dharwad , Gadag, Haveri , Bijapur , Bagalkot, Belgaum and Karwar.
The main campus of the University, known as Pavate Nagar is situated in Dharwad on the Chota Mahabaleshwar Hillock envisioned by sylvan surrounding of unparalleled beauty, The Dharwad campus offers as many as 43 P.G. Courses, 17 Diploma courses and 11 Certificate courses . The second P.G.center established in Karwar in 1975 offering a two-year P.G.Courses in marine Biology and M.phil and Ph.D courses.The third P.G.center was established in 1982 at Belgaum, which offers seven P.G. courses. It is now shifted to the new and spacious bhootaramanahatti campus, some 15 Kms from Belgaum side of National Highway. The fourth center came into being in March 1994 at Bijapur. This center offers P.G. Diploma courses in Art History and Tourism. The University has jurisdiction over nearly 1,00,000 students enrolled for the undergraduate and 4500 students for the P.G. courses.

This University has undertaken a number of maiden collaborative research institution in India and abroad. our faculty members have established ties with researches in countries such as USA ,Germany,France,UK ,etc. the University is fortunate enough in having received and listened to distinguished statesmen, scientists, educationists and literary figures including a Nobel Laureate.

P.G. Studies and Research depts.at Dharwad Campus:

1. Arts: Depts. of Kannada, English, Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Music and Foreign Languages, Folklore, Urdu and Persian.

2. Commerce: Department of studies in Commerce

3. Education: Department of Studies in Education and Physical Education

4. Medicine: Facilities for Post-graduate Studies and Research in Medicine are offered at the KMC Hubli, J.N.M.C Belgaum B.M.Patil Medical College, Bijapur which are affiliated to this University. These courses are being delinked from this University, stage by stage.

5. LAW: Department of studies in Law.

6. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: Depts. of Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Marine Biology and Geology. Marine Biology Department (located at the PG Center,Karwar,a coastal town at a distance of about 160 Kms South- West of Dharwad), Computer Science, Electronics and Sericulture,

7. SOCIAL SCIENCES: Depts. of Psychology, History & Archaeology, ancient Indian History , Philosophy, political Science, Economics, Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology, Criminology, Library and information Science, Mass Communication & Journalism, Gandhian Studies and Yoga Studies, jainology & Ambedkar Studies.

8. MANAGEMENT STUDIES: Kousali Institute of Management Studies.

9. STUDIES RELATING TO MUSEOLOGY AND CULUTURE OF KARNATAKA: Kannada Research Institute was established in 1937 and became a part of the Karnataka University later. It has a museum and gallery of art and archaeology attached to it apart from its excellent manuscripts that are of rare vintage . Diploma Courses in Epigraphy is conducted in this Institute.

10. ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: Post-graduate courses in engineering is conducted by the University at Hubli, Hulkoti, Dharwad, Belgaum and Bijapur. These courses are being delinked from this University, stage by stage.

POST-GRADUATE COURSES AT BELGAUM CAMPUS:
In June 1982 the University opened a new campus at Belgaum where facilities are available for post-graduate studies and research leading to both master's and Doctorate Degree programs in seven disciplines, viz., Kannada, Marathi, economics,commerce, Geography, Sociology and Mathematics. It is proposed to start PGDCA courses during 98-99.

The University has provided basic facilities on the campus. About 200 acres of land has been acquired on Poona-Bangalore highway No. 4. It is 20 Kms . away from Belgaum City . The University has constructed academic building at the estimated cost of Rs. 75.00 lakhs.A hostel for students and a furnished Guest House with well laid roads and independent water supply is provided. About 3 Crores of rupees are invested to develop the campus and created academic facility on the campus.

P.G.COURSES AT KARWAR:
This is the second P.G.Center established in 1975 which offers a 2-year P.G.Course in Marine Biology and M.Phil and Ph.D Courses. Master of Commerce Course is introduced from this year (1998-99)

P.G.Courses Bijapur : This is the fourth P.G. Course of the University established in 1994 offering P.G. Diploma Course in Art History and Tourism .

P.G.Course At Dandeli: The University has started a M.Tech Course in Pulp and Paper Science from the year 1998-99.

Linkage With Development : With the support of the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and the U.G.C the University established the Gandhi Bhavan where the Department of Gandhian Studies is housed, and has created facilities for the propagation of Gandhian ideas through a multidisciplinary approach and a multiphase program,viz establishment of a Gandhian Library, a one year Diploma Course in Gandhian Studies, adoption of a village for bringing about all-round development in village by students ,etc

Certificate and Diploma Course :

Certificate and Diploma Course are offered in Kannada, German, French Russian, Tamil, Statistic, Yoga, Music, Translation , Jainology , Linguistics and BasavaStudies.

Studies in Multidisciplinary subject:

The University has established several Chairs and started Diploma Courses in the following to promote the lofty ideals , philosophy , way of life and thinking of the great saints, scholars and political thinkers in the contemporary context, At present there are six Chairs which are already established namely Basava Chair, TamilChair ,Ambedkar Chair and VemanaChair .

SpecialTraining Programs:

With a view to helping those who take the All-India Competitive Examination for entering the Indian Administrative Service including Banking or the Provincial Administrative Service , provision has been made for training them at a Center specially established for the purpose .Financial assistance is also granted in the case of students belonging to weaker section like the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

External Courses:

The University has also been offering external degree facilities . Under this scheme persons residing either in India or abroad who are unable to attend recognized colleges as regular students can register in the faculties of Arts ,Social Science and Commerce either at the undergraduate level or at the post graduate level as external candidates . They can also take up Mathematics in the science Faculty

The basic qualification for registering as external candidate for the First year of a Degree Course is a pass in Pre-University examination or equivalent. For the Master degree course a candidate must have passed the degree examination in the appropriate subjects For the Diploma in Foreign languages a candidate must have passed a certificate course in the respective languages or the Pre-University examination with that language .

Prof.S.S.Basavanal Library:

The University Library is named after Prof.S.S.Basavanal,a well known Litterateur of Karnataka and has on its shelves over 3,50.000 books and is receiving about 434 periodical publication .It is kept open on 358 days in year from 8.00 a.m to 9.00 p.m on all days except Sunday ,Tuesdays and holidays,
when it is kept open from 11.00 a.m to 6.00 p.m During the examination season it is kept open till 11.00 p.m Prof. S.S.Basavanal Library is housed in an independent building of its own .A separate text books corner for SC/ST students and IAS study corner are the features of the library.

United Nations Depository Center: The Library has been designated United Nation Depository Center where important United Nations Documents are received regularly and are available for consultation.

Prasaranga (Publication Division): For carrying the torch of knowledge to the very door steps of the common man , the university has established the "Prasaranga" which Organizes Extension Lecture camps in the rural areas ,and special lecture camps in and around Dharwad .It also publishes books based on research work and also six Journal in Arts ,Social Science and sciences in English and Kannada including "Vidyarthi Bharati" meant for students.


Students Amenities :

Hostels: There are six student hostels, two for girls, three for boys, and one for research students on the campus accommodating around 1200 students out of whom 250 are lady students. the main canteen on the campus is kept open on all days, except Sundays.The student home serves meals at subsidized rates.

Health Center: Moderately equipped Health Center has been functioning on the University campus for the last 30 years. This center caters to large number of patients in a year ( approximately 30,000 patients) . A branch of it is also functioning in Karnataka College Campus

Employment Information and Guidance Bureau : The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau was started in the year 1970 and has an employment exchange office of the Government Karnataka attached to it.

Gold Medals and scholarships:
The meritorious students are given moral and financial support through various scholarships, cash prizes,and gold medals instituted at the University in addition to the various concessions given by the Government. At present there are as many as 108 Gold medals, 41 prizes and 14 scholarships available.

Sports: The sporting boys and girls have done well in cycling ,kabaddi, cricket ,best physique , cross country race ,hurdles, horizontal bar, volley ball, etc., at the national and international levels.

P.G.Gymkhana:

It is a forum of the students of the University meant for promoting the sports and cultural potentialities among the students. The Post-graduate Gymkhana can boast of noteworthy success at various competitions and meets, including international cultural exchange program (Japan) and National Youth Festival held at Mumbai recently,

Central Workshop:
The University has established with financial assistance from the U.G.C a Center Workshop for repairs and maintenance of equipment in the science Departments.

University Scientific Instrumentation Center:

The University has established the Scientific Instrumentation Center with special financial assistance from the U.G.C The Center is housed in an independent building and has acquired several sophisticated and costly equipment.

Botanical Garden:
Vast areas are planted with different species of trees. A Botanical Garden, with very rare species of plants, is a focal point of shade as well as for the material for botanical Research.

Other facilities on the campus : There is a Post & Telegraph office on the campus .There are branches of the state Bank of India and the Syndicate Bank .The KSRTC plies buses to University from Dharwad Bus Stand and Hubli.
